Writing Update

This has been a good week as far as writing goes. I’ve been getting back in the grove and enjoying the process. Here is what I’ve been working on.

  1. My horror, short story collection. I’ve been self editing, rewriting and adding more content. It will be a short read with a few of my favorite pieces. This will likely be my first self published work.
  2. Reaching out to freelance editors to help with my short story  project. So far, it’s been difficult to find editors who will work on shorter works but I’m hopeful someone will assist.
  3. It Watches. This is a novella I’ve been working on some time. A previous post I discussed this, When a Short Story Becomes a Novel, it’s based off a flash fiction piece I wrote. This week I just figured out the ending, which helps me write the story faster.
  4. Having fun!

Let me know how your writing is going. I love hearing about everyone else’s journeys.

Where Do I Go From Here?

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve posted anything about my writing journey. To be honest, it’s come to a slow, painful crawl. It’s not that I don’t have material to write about. Finding time, energy and motivation can be difficult. I also have enough rejection slips to build a paper house out of. The voices tell me I’m not cut out to be a writer and I should quit right now. Then again, maybe the traditional route isn’t where my journey needs to go.

I’ve come to a point where I feel like taking a chance, since I have nothing to lose. Something in the works is I’m going to self publish a short story collection. This would motivate me to finish a project and say I’m an author. There’s a few other reasons I’m doing this, one being it is inexpensive for me to achieve. There is a title and a cover all picked out. Hell, the cover is already made. I’ve just been keeping it tucked away while I mull over what to do next.

There’s still a lot to learn about self publishing like formatting, uploading it to Amazon and so forth. I’m looking at this as something fun to do and prove I can do it.

So where do I go from here? I’m going to build my own path. Let me know your thoughts or if you’re in the same boat.

Beware the Slenderman: Documentary Discussion

Do you believe in the Slenderman? Well, two teenage girls in Wisconsin do, so much that they attempted to murder their best friend. I watched the documentary, Beware the Slenderman, on HBO. I like watching true crime films, but find it rare to find one integrating the supernatural.

It’s not so crazy to hear about youngsters believing in something that isn’t real. As a kid, I believed in monsters in my closet and Freddy Krueger. Maybe I still do sometimes since I have a knack for the horror genre.

One thing I will say watching the interviews with the two girls, they really do believe in Slenderman. They believe they had to do the crime because their lives and families were in danger. If you watch the documentary, it’s chilling to see their responses and answers to the detectives questions. They discuss it openly and in a nonchalant way.

Overall, I give the documentary 3.5 stars out of 5.

Let me know if you’ve watched the film and your thoughts.

Trends

One problem with getting published is trends. What is popular? What are readers craving? There’s a lot of discussion if writers should follow trends or not. I can’t write something based off a trend. So if unicorns riding Segways becomes a must in stories, you won’t see me writing it.

It does makes sense why good stories get rejected. Maybe the topic was all the rage two years ago, but now the market is saturated, and everyone else is sick of it. It’s time to move on to something else.

I’ve found a good way to identify trends is reading Literary Agents requests when submitting books. This may not always be the case, but I wonder if it’s because they’re going off what readers want or what will become popular. There’s no way to predict what will be a best seller, but one can try to be proactive in that aspect.

Anyone else have input on this? What are your thoughts?

No Service

This is a dark, flash fiction piece.

No Service

Every week I dread it, the drive to pick up my son from his mother’s house. My son isn’t the one I despise. It’s my bitch of an ex and her new husband. They love to shove their new life and wealth in my face. Why else would they live in a mansion in the middle of damn nowhere?

The drive consists of winding roads with no streetlights for miles. Not to mention it’s two hours from where I live.

Stupid bitch.

She did this on purpose.

My hands turn to crank the radio but there’s nothing, just static. Not even one damn channel to listen to. At this point I’d listen to classical, it’d be better than the silence.

Night has already settled in, casting gloominess to my mood. I reach for the bag of peanuts and shove a handful in my mouth.

I round a corner, going faster than I should when something catches my eyes. Someone is lying in the middle of the road.

I swerve to avoid crushing them but the wheel slips from my grasp. The car is reeling out of control as I grip it tight and put it back center.

My feet slam on the brakes as the car slides to a stop. The fresh rain made the road slick and I’m lucky I didn’t drive into a ditch.

My breath is ragged as I calm myself down, thinking of how close I came to losing it. I breathe in and out, just like therapy.

I crane my neck backward, the body still in the middle of the road. Not moving.

“Shit,” I mutter.

I reach for my cell phone to call for help. I dial 911, but get the No Service signal.

“Of course,” I toss the phone in the middle console and step out of the car.

I approach slowly, creeping like a panther. “Hello? Hey Buddy!” I call out.

Nothing.

Silence.

Zilch.

The man’s face is crooked the other way. I kneel down to get a better glance and roll him towards me.

Shit.

It’s him. Her new husband.

Blood pools on the concrete.

He’s in a jogging outfit; someone hit him and took off. Not that I blame the culprit because he’s such an asshole.

“Shit.” I say again. My hands rub the back of my hand till it hurts.

His chest rises and falls, he’s alive. What should I do? There’s no way to call for help. If I move him I could do more damage, but I have to take him with me. It’s the right thing to do, isn’t it?

I mean, I couldn’t just leave him out here, in the middle of the road, dying.

Or could I?

Writing

The Rush

So many story ideas and not enough time to write them, at least not all at once. It’s hard to buckle down on one project because my mind tends to wander. At any given time I’m working on a novel, a novella and a short story.

I get in a mad rush.

I’m trying to change these habits and work on one at a time, but it’s hard to do. It feels like I’m not doing enough but doing more isn’t always the answer. Burn out and writers block make me not want to write.

I’m trying to simplify it. Even if I only write 500 words a day that’s still 168,000 words a year. That’s quite a bit! That’s a couple of novels and some short stories.

Being a writer can be a very tedious journey, especially when trying to get your foot in the door. For now, I’ll keep it simple and only do what I can, without going too crazy.

Anyone else in the same boat?

Books I’m Reading #4

It’s been a few months since I’ve done one of these, so here it goes! They are different genres because I don’t like sticking to just one. These are all books I recommend and enjoyed.

Harry Potter I know, I haven’t read the Harry Potter series. I never got into it but have recently read the third book. After reading each book I watch the movie. I’m way behind the times.

Sinister Entity by Hunter Shea– One of my favorite authors! I always enjoy his work and can’t wait to read the next one in the series.

Goliath: A Kaiju Thriller by Russ Watts- I love a good monster story. This one didn’t disappoint.

The Wheel Mages by Aimee Davis– I follow Aimee’s blog, this was her debut novel and she is a very gifted writer. If you enjoy fantasy you should check out her book.

Let me know what books your reading and recommend!
