Trying Something New

I write everyday, but I never write about my personal thoughts on paper. Just this week, I purchased a journal to handwrite in. I thought this would be a good idea to write down anything worrying me or reflect on what I want to change. If I can keep up with it, I hope to read back in a year and see what parts of my life have changed.

Already I’ve discovered writing on paper takes more effort than typing. Duh! I know, but when you type everything out, handwriting seems like a chore. Here are a few things I’ve discovered.

I choose words carefully.

I can type quickly, but writing by hand takes more time. Each sentence takes extra thought and care.

I think more about what I’m writing.

When writing by hand, I feel more in tune with my thoughts because they are slowed down.

My handwriting is atrocious.

Even if someone wanted to read my journal. Good luck, because my handwriting has always been terrible. Sometimes I can’t even read it.

Does anyone else keep a journal?

  1. I think typing does that to us but to be honest mine has never been that good to start of with. I love your idea though. I used to keep a journal and I found the same thing, I had to think more and sometimes when I get stuck for ideas I write them down by hand. I like your something new and I hope you keep us up-to-date as the year progresses.

  2. I love writing by hand. I write everything by hand, including all of my manuscripts. When I was at college, our writing professors strongly encouraged us to all write by hand for some of the same reasons you pointed out. I keep journals as well, though I’m not very good with keeping up with them. I used to stress out about that like, “I haven’t written in X weeks!” Now, I figure they’re for writing down my thoughts, not to stress about so I write when I have something I just need to get out and leave it at that.

    • Wow that’s impressive! I can’t imagine writing my book out by hand. I don’t get to do it everyday but am working on it. Thanks for stopping by Aimee.

  3. I don’t journal much, but I do a weekly blog on my fledgling writing career, which helps me journal in a way, and it’s just a lot of fun to type out. Daily? I just forget too often to be reliable.

  4. I keep a journal but I don’t always get to it everyday. I have found it helps clear my thoughts when I’m overthinking. I also use it to keep a gratitude list. Have fun with your journal!

    • I should do a gratitude list. It’s easy to focus on the negative all the time but the positive is more important. I’ll have to keep that in mind.
