Writing

The Rush

So many story ideas and not enough time to write them, at least not all at once. It’s hard to buckle down on one project because my mind tends to wander. At any given time I’m working on a novel, a novella and a short story.

I get in a mad rush.

I’m trying to change these habits and work on one at a time, but it’s hard to do. It feels like I’m not doing enough but doing more isn’t always the answer. Burn out and writers block make me not want to write.

I’m trying to simplify it. Even if I only write 500 words a day that’s still 168,000 words a year. That’s quite a bit! That’s a couple of novels and some short stories.

Being a writer can be a very tedious journey, especially when trying to get your foot in the door. For now, I’ll keep it simple and only do what I can, without going too crazy.

Anyone else in the same boat?

  1. I’ve tried to do that before; Multitasking, is it? The truth is- When you divide your resources, time, etc. you get less done, not more. For a great work to be written, it is imperative you BECOME your story; and for that to happen, you need to concentrate on only that story.

Something else to think about- I read in an article no so long ago that Stephen King talks to characters in his stories (that he writes) in order to get to “know” them! Sounds kind of crazy, right? But it also makes sense for a Writer to do such a thing, so maybe not so crazy for people like us. 🙂

So from one Writer to another I say, Enjoy life- one story at a time. All the best to you! 🙂

  2. Hey Joanna,
I think there is no easy way with writing. I feel the same as you but I think ‘mostly’ one at a time is probably the best way to go, I find answering emails and reading blogs and commenting in general on media takes up that 500 before I start so I have to conserve energy.
Just keep going the best you can and routine where you can. I know you will do well. Me, I ‘m still waiting to find out lol.

  3. I’m in the same boat. I love this story idea I have, but I am having trouble getting myself to write. I’m too tired. I have so many other ideas too, but I’m afraid to start on them because I’m afraid it will take focus from the first.

    1. I know how you feel, if I’m too tired to write, I often just jot the ideas down in my phone for later. If only the writing process were easy!

  4. Pretty much the story of my life. I hop from idea to idea, but only when I sit down and focus on one do I get it done. However, that inspiration does come in clumps sometimes. I work on one for a while, hit a roadblock, and move on to another. Of course, if you have a deadline of any sort, it’s a different beast.
