Oh The Holidays…

Christmas is almost here and I haven’t started shopping yet. Typically, I’m on top of my game but not this year. Writing has been put off to the side but I try to squeeze it in. Although, I feel like it’s not going anywhere right now.

It’s hard to get on the roller coaster of writing everyday. Even getting a thousand words seems like a dire chore that I’d rather set aside. Instead, I’ve been editing and going over some new stories in the works. There’s a novella I’d like to submit to a publisher and another novel I’m about half way finished with.

Aside from my writing world, we’re finally getting settled in the house and put up a Christmas tree! My future in laws didn’t want their big tree anymore, so I gladly took it. The holiday season is hectic and stressful, but I do like the beauty from the lights.

This year has had it’s challenges, but a lot of good has come from it. I’m very happy to be in my own place starting new memories. I hope to make many more.

I hope everyone is having a good holiday season! I better start my shopping now. 🙂

Oh The Holidays

The holidays are here and bring lots of distractions and setbacks. It’s the time of year when things we want to accomplish are pushed away to make time for family gatherings or working more hours. Maybe you’re doing last minute shopping and fighting through crazy shopping malls. Finding time to write is often pushed aside.

This is happening to me.

I try to remember one thing; a small accomplishment is still an achievement. Even if I can only edit one page a day or write two paragraphs, it’s still something to get me further along. Doing something is better than doing nothing.

The last few days I haven’t done much writing at all, not even reading. I don’t plan on writing much the rest of this week. I want to enjoy the rest of the holiday season. I still need to watch Edward Scissorhands and Die Hard. Yes, I consider Die Hard a Christmas movie.

The truth is, there are always setbacks when it comes to writing. Life always has some hiccup to get in the way of reaching our goals. As much as I despise work, it’s what pays the bills and allows me to write. Without income, I can’t pay the power or Internet bill.

For the next week, I’m going to give myself a break. I know this weekend I’ll be enjoying a few drinks and stuffing my face with cookies. Mmm, cookies. Anyone else feel the same?

I hope everyone is having a nice holiday season. Although, I can’t wait for it to be over!

My Favorite Christmas Things

I’m not going to fool you, I had no idea what to blog about this week. However, since it’s the season I thought to share my favorite Christmas things.

Movie– Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer. Maybe it’s the clay animation but this movie still is number one in my book. I also bought it at Target today, guess what I’m watching tonight?

Favorite Christmas Treat– Cookies of any kind. I did make some, but ate them all before I could snap a photo. Oops.

Favorite Christmas Decorations– Shotgun shell lights my brother made. He gave these to me a couple of years ago, they still rock compared to my other decorations. Plus, I love shooting, so it’s a win.

Favorite Christmas Games-This one is a tie between Tripoley and Cards Against Humanity. You can play these anytime, but my family likes to play Tripoley when we’re all together. We end up talking smack and losing our money. It’s a good time.  Tripoley is basically several different poker games combined into one.

Cards Against Humanity is a game you play with some others after a few drinks. I guarantee you’ll be laughing. It’s probably not a good game to play with children around, it has profanity and adult humor.

Favorite Holiday Drink– Hot Buttered Rum, except I usually put bourbon in mine. Maybe too much bourbon. 🙂

I hope everyone is having a good weekend. Tell me your favorite Christmas things!

Holiday Gift Guide for Writers

The holidays are here! Everyone is shopping like crazy buying gifts. I came up with a gift guide for writers, hope you enjoy and get some ideas. Tell me what’s on your wish list. Happy Holidays!

Coffee gift set– You can also do tea or hot cocoa. These are inexpensive and you can pick these up at target. I also found one on Amazon.

Massage gift certificate– Writers sit and crouch all the time. How about a nice massage to loosen up the shoulders and back? I know this is what I’d want.

Writer Mug– Cliche I know, but this one is currently on my Wish List. I think it’s funny.

Yoga or sweat pants– Who the hell types in jeans? Comfort all the way.

Some other websites with cool gifts.

ManCrates.com – For all those men in your life. They have good ideas.

UncommonGoods.com – This is also a place to get ideas.

Etsy.com– The link attached is Gifts for Writers

Hope this gives you ideas, let me know what’s on your holiday wish list.

Scary Stories Oh My!

Is it Halloween yet? We’re getting close. Fall season is always my favorite time, especially in the Pacific Northwest. If you’ve never seen it during fall, you’re missing out.

I’ve found short stories are a fun way to be creative and pack a punch. There’s less space to work with, so each word counts. You can get right to the meaty part.

Since we are getting close to Halloween, I’m trying to dabble into some horror/thriller topics. I have a few in the works but they need more tweaking. I may decide to post a couple on here for fun.

Something about being scared is intriguing and keeps me interested. Hair standing at the back of my neck or “jump” scares are the best.  Sometimes, the scariest feeling is the one thing you can’t see, it makes your imagination go wild. All the thoughts you try not to think about, you do.

Anyone else excited for the Halloween season? Any horror book recommendations please send my way. Also, what scares you?
