Oh The Holidays…

Christmas is almost here and I haven’t started shopping yet. Typically, I’m on top of my game but not this year. Writing has been put off to the side but I try to squeeze it in. Although, I feel like it’s not going anywhere right now.

It’s hard to get on the roller coaster of writing everyday. Even getting a thousand words seems like a dire chore that I’d rather set aside. Instead, I’ve been editing and going over some new stories in the works. There’s a novella I’d like to submit to a publisher and another novel I’m about half way finished with.

Aside from my writing world, we’re finally getting settled in the house and put up a Christmas tree! My future in laws didn’t want their big tree anymore, so I gladly took it. The holiday season is hectic and stressful, but I do like the beauty from the lights.

This year has had it’s challenges, but a lot of good has come from it. I’m very happy to be in my own place starting new memories. I hope to make many more.

I hope everyone is having a good holiday season! I better start my shopping now. 🙂

My First Cover Reveal!

The title of this post is correct! I am revealing the cover for my debut novel, Never Settle. This is a contemporary romance set in New Orleans.  Sarah Hansen with Okay Creations accomplished the look I wanted and I couldn’t be happier.

I will release a blurb, sneak peeks and the release date soon.

Let me know what you think!

Ready for Fall

Everywhere I look on social media are postings about fall. I’m sure ready for it. Plus right now we really need the rain in Washington. I’ve never been a fan of the heat and prefer the dreary days. Proof I’m a Washingtonian.

There is a lot I’d like to achieve in the next few months. I’m working on a novella that I plan to submit to a few publishers. It’s different and sort of out of my comfort zone, but I’m trying to expand as a writer. I wrote a different novel where I completed a rough draft but want to give it time to cool off.

I hope to get my manuscript back from my editor and see what the next step is. I’m guessing more rewrites and self editing. It’s a long process and harder than I thought.

Writing is my outlet for stress right now, every time I read the news there is something terrible going on. I can’t control the world, but I can control my stories. I’m just going to keep on writing.

On a side note, I really hope to get out of the house this weekend. I’m thinking a hike sounds refreshing right now.

My Favorite Books as a Kid

I just did a Books I’m Reading post, but thought I’d do a little throwback and talk about books I loved as a kid. This took me back to memory lane a bit, but here are a few. Tell me your favorite books when you were younger.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark by Alvin Schwartz

Gosh. These books scared the hell out of me. I remember my older brother reading them and I’d get nightmares. I’d read these again if I could get my hand on a copy. One short story I remember in particular was Bloody Fingers and from then on, I was terrified of the closet.

The Beatrix Potter Collection: Tale of Peter Rabbit

I checked Amazon but it appears the DVD’s are only available. I’m sure the book series is out there somewhere. I hope so, because I read these constantly as a child. The illustrations were also well done.

The Goosebumps series by R.L. Stine

I think every kid in my age group was crazy about this book series. The TV show wasn’t too bad back then either. Then again it was the 90’s.

I’m probably missing a few, but these are the ones that stood out to me.

Books I’m Reading #5

Another round of Books I’m Reading! Haven’t done one since January. Lately I’ve been on a romance kick, but still enjoy a horror story now and then. With fall around the corner I will probably read more horror/thriller.  These are just a few that stood out to me. Let me know if you’ve read any of these and what you’re reading.

Tarryn Fisher is an author I’ve recently discovered. So far I love her books and writing style. The characters draw me in, and when I pick up a Fisher novel I can’t put it down. I’ve read Atheists Who Kneel and Pray and F*ck Love. Both I recommend.

The Unrequited by Saffron A. Kent. This book is different; the main character has a lot of issues and the sex scenes are pretty explicit, not saying it’s a bad thing. This one also sucked me in until the end.

I read this series out of order without realizing it. Robert Dugoni, The Trapped Girl. This book drew me in because it takes place in Washington state. I do enjoy crime/mystery novels. This book shows the view of the victim and the detective solving the case. There are a lot of twists and character development.

Karina Halle, one of my favorite authors…the first book in her new North Ridge series Wild Card. I’d been waiting on this book for months. Great story, memorable characters and I can’t wait to meet the rest of the Nelson brothers. This book made me want to drink whiskey and live on a farm. Even if you’re not into Western’s you should give this book a shot. I wouldn’t consider it a Western.

I always post what I’ve read on Goodreads and it’s on the right side of my blog.

I Wrote Another Novel

Since picking up writing again, I revisited a romance novel I’ve been working on and threw myself into it. I’m a writer who can get work done fast when I need to. One day I wrote 10,000 words. That’s a huge achievement for me.

There is only one way to become a better writer and that’s butt in chair typing away. Some nights I couldn’t sleep. I’d get up at 1 AM and type, edit, add chapters, delete chapters, drink more coffee, write down ideas. My fiancé thought I was crazy at times.

It’s a novel I’m proud of and I hope to make something of it. I have a lot of work to do and have hired an editor to help me with the process. This is a big commitment and pricey but I have to go the distance. I’m really trying to make my dream come to life and I’m doing it because I want to.

Last week, I sent that manuscript to the editor so I won’t hear anything for a few weeks. I’m anxious and excited to see what she recommends.

Since then, I’m already starting another novel and trying to aim for 1000 words a day. I also want to try plotting. I’m usually a person who goes by the seat of my pants but would like to try it for once. I plan to do a blog post about that soon.

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Writing Diary – July

For the first time in months, it’s been good in my writing life. I also finished a rough draft for a book that takes place in New Orleans. I started it before my trip there, but purposely held off because I knew I’d have more material when I got home. Researching a place and seeing it are two different things. I was able to add small details in the book I wouldn’t have known unless I visited. Especially when it comes to the food. 🙂

It’s a romance novel, which is something new to me. I don’t want to be stuck with one genre because I enjoy them all. There’s several new books I’m reading and may do another Books I’m Reading post soon.

I’m staying positive and know the process doesn’t happen overnight. I can only focus on my journey and improve my craft.

Hope everyone else is having a good month! Let me know what projects you’re working on. writer
